For the next issue of Cannopy Magazine, we’re asking artists a simple question: Are You In Love? We want to get a sense of how they fell in love with their latest project, and how the many loves of their lives can be channeled into one artistic vessel.
Next up: Michael Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger
Hiss Golden Messenger—the North Carolina-based project of Michael Taylor—has released his new album today titled I’m People via Chrysalis Records. “I know what the record is to me,” Taylor declared in his artist statement, “and I bet it’s not so dissimilar from what it’s about to you, at least in the broad strokes: The heartbreak and exhilaration, the absolute black comedy of being a person on this razor’s edge, this lion’s jaw, that is America circa 2026. What other choice do we have than to be hopeful?” Indeed, I’m People is a call to hope, a call to introspection — and, ultimately, a call action. Written across New Mexico, California, and North Carolina, and recorded in a decommissioned church in upstate New York, the album was co-produced by Taylor and Josh Kaufman and features a wide range of collaborators including Bruce Hornsby, Sam Beam, and Marcus King.
