John Storgårds: Are You In Love?

INTERVIEW — The acclaimed Finnish conductor steps into a new chapter at the helm of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra

For the next issue of Cannopy Magazine, we’re asking artists a simple question: Are You In Love? We want to get a sense of how they fell in love with their latest project, and how the many loves of their lives can be channeled into one artistic vessel.

Next up: John Storgårds

John Storgårds by Phil Sharp

Internationally acclaimed Finnish conductor John Storgårds steps into a defining new role as the next Music Director of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO) beginning in the 2026–2027 season, marking the latest crescendo in a decade-long artistic relationship with “Canada’s orchestra.” Known for his imaginative programming and balance of intensity and refinement, Storgårds brings a global (and strongly Finnish) perspective shaped by collaborations with the world’s leading orchestras, along with a strong affinity for Canadian artists and contemporary voices. His tenure promises to deepen the Orchestra’s national and international impact—championing new works and nurturing emerging talent. But with his concurrent commitments as Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic and the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as Artistic Director of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra — how will the NACO rise to be his one true love?

Listen to the NACO’s introduction of their new conductor below, and subscribe to The Cannopy Newsletter for our full interview with John Storgårds.
