Missy Mazzoli has described herself as a punk keyboardist, a certified Death Doula, and a composer—in roughly that order of surprise. What unites those roles is a preoccupation with the edges of human experience. This upcoming 2026/27 concert season, that preoccupation reaches its most monumental expression yet, as Mazzoli becomes the first woman to have an opera solely commissioned and premiered by the Metropolitan Opera—Lincoln in the Bardo, based on George Saunders’ Booker Prize-winning novel, opening this October in the context of the United States’ 250th anniversary. Before that, The Galloping Cure, her allegory of the opioid crisis, opens at the Edinburgh International Festival this August. A piano concerto follows in 2027. It is, by any measure, a history-making season; so Cannopy sat down with her to know what love looks like at the centre of it.
