Elysia Biro grew up in the trees. Vancouver Island, far enough out of town that nature wasn’t a backdrop—it was the whole frame. Classically trained at four, jazz by ear at thirteen, she came to improvisation not through the downtown club tradition but through something closer to weather: the understanding that you can never fully know what’s going to happen, and that reacting honestly to what's in the room is the whole point of jazz. Running From Nothing, her debut EP on Universal Music Canada and Deutsche Grammophon, indeed sounds like it was made somewhere green.
This isn’t exactly the launch of her career, and Biro isn’t the industry plant of yore. She’s been doing her thing, and the industry is finally taking notice. Her numbers are already impressive: 5.8 million streams, 1 sold-out London Jazz Festival date, 1 million followers built before an album release—but can digital fandom translate to real life connections?
